Being Cyber Secure, need of the hour

Hello Everyone! I wish all of you are safe during this tough time and humbly appeal everyone not to leave home, if it is not urgently required.

Today in this Internet era, where we all are dependent aggressively upon Internet, it is also important to be vigilant and Cyber Secure. Internet has made things easier for each one of us in different ways altogether. However, at the same time it is very important for each Internet user to opt various techniques that would make us Cyber Secure. We are using Internet for making different kind of communications, uploading and downloading of data, various apps, games, etc. However, we are least concerned whether the data, app, software, game etc. that we are downloading, is that worth downloading or just occupying unnecessary space in our computers/ mobiles. For e.g. if I ask a question, how many of us have read the terms and conditions, user agreement, disclaimers etc. before creation of an account on any app, game, or even before creating any email account. Most of us would say that we just saw where is the “I agree” button and clicked the same and created the account and since then using the same.

My dear friends, it is good to be tech savvy, however, it is also important to be little law friendly as well. Every app, game, software, e-mail service provider etc. gives an option to read the terms and conditions and other user agreements before creation of any account on any of these apps or softwares and once you read the terms and conditions, user agreements, disclaimers, etc. you would either stop using such apps or you would be little skeptical while using such apps, games, softwares, etc. The reality is that we can’t stop using apps, games, softwares, etc. as they are the important part of our digital lives. However, at the same time, it is also important to be Cyber Secure and to identify pros and cons of each app or software that we use frequently in our day-to-day life.

As we all know that recently Govt. of India has announced interim ban on 59 apps which are linked with China, including top social media platforms such as TikTok, Helo, WeChat, UC browser, Shareit etc. After this ban I’ve been receiving many calls from friends, clients and other netizens who are concerned about their personal and financial data which was somehow stored on these apps. Accordingly, I have advised all of them as per their needs, but one thing which is common for all is that being an Internet user we should follow certain secure practices that would help us to remain Cyber Secure in future.

We should not give all the permissions/consent while using any third party apps in our Mobile phones, as generally, it has been seen that most of the netizens gives full permissions of phone gallery, contacts, messages, and even authorize to make, receive calls and even to send messages from their service provider at the cost of the user, to almost all the third party apps and later when they become victim of any Cyber Crime, they commit that they have made this mistake unintentionally. Today, we all are connected 24*7 to Internet with almost all the apps available for us for making our digital life convenient, which includes banking apps, E-commerce apps, UPI apps, Emails, Social Networking apps, Games, and hundreds of those apps which we hardly use but keep it with the view that it might be used in future.

Dear friends, in most of the financial frauds or Cyber Crime cases, it has been found that most of the people who do not follow the security practices or who do not know the secure methods, become the easy targets of the hackers online and finally become victims of online Financial Frauds or Cyber Crimes. We should be vigilant when we are using or we are not using the Internet.

As per my personal experience while handling various cases, I would like to share few recommendations for every mobile Internet user, which are as follows;
  1. Switch-off the phones (especially at night) when not in use.
  2. Turn-off the Internet when not in use.
  3. Clear the cache memory regularly.
  4. Clean the browsing history regularly.
  5. Remove the bank details, card no. or any financial details from all the E-commerce portals/apps immediately after using it.
  6. Do not keep any financial information in the phone storage.
  7. Keep removing the apps in the background, which are not in use.
  8. Use updated apps and keep them updating from the genuine links only.
  9. keep your valuable data or information safe in the external storage devices and keep taking backups frequently.
  10. Don’t download any image/video from any anonymous user.
