Banning 59 Chinese mobile apps, a good initiative

Hello Everyone, I wish all of you are safe at home during this pandemic time.

Post lockdown 1.0, the use of mobiles and various apps have been increased drastically all over the world, wherein the download ratio was too higher for Chinese apps like TikTok, Helo, WeChat, UC browser, Shareit and many more in the list. These mobile apps have been used by the netizens for a longer period of time, and there were lot of privacy and security issues reported in the past with these apps, including transmission of data going via international routes without authorization.

To counter the Cyber Security threats posed by these apps to the country’s “sovereignty and security, the Govt. of India, recently has announced interim ban on 59 apps which are linked with China, including top social media platforms such as TikTok, Helo, WeChat, UC browser, Shareit etc.  The interim ban has been imposed by the Govt. under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 read with relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009.

The Govt. has considered various aspects and complaints about misuse of mobile apps engaged in stealing and transmitting its user’s data in an unauthorised manner to those servers which were located outside India, which was the foremost security concern towards the country’s national security. As per rules, all the banned app operators shall explain their stand to a committee formed by the central government, wherein explanations would be weighed against the facts and findings. According to me, it is one of the very good initiatives taken by the Govt. in the interest of national security and the Govt. should form a dedicated team of IT auditors who should audit thousands of apps frequently used by Indians, which are somehow funded by the Chinese companies.

After Google has removed these apps from its Google Play Store, as per the direction of Home Ministry and MeitY, lot of users of these apps have called me and asked what would happen to our data which is already available on these apps and also wish if they would have been given some time to delete their data from those Apps. This is one of the problems with our digital data, as we have GBs of data and we don’t take pain to store the data on our storage devices. In case if anything happens to the App or if the data gets compromised, we have nothing but to accept the scenario we are in, at that time.

It is always advisable to keep your valuable data or information safe in the storage devices and keep taking backups frequently. And as it is said, “there is never too late, if we mend our ways timely”. In the similar way it is very important for each netizen to take backup of important data from all the Apps and social network platforms and delete it as early as you can and always take precautions when using the Cyber Space.
